I bought this set at the end of August this year and have now learnt all the Hiragana and Katakana characters they contain. The layout is excellent and the word examples are a great help in reinforcing the sound meaning of the characters. The mnemonics used for the different characters are sometimes a little bizarre but they work very effectively indeed. I strongly recommend that you start learning the hiragana characters first and the katakana after that as there are a couple of katakana which are very similar to each other in how they look (the katakana 'shi' and 'tsu' are very similar, especially in printed form). I also bought the cd version of the audio companion to the card set at the same time and have found that this was a great help in the correct pronunciation of the kana characters and example words. Hope this was of some help to anybody out there wishing to learn written Japanese..

These cards were very helpful. It gives the reader a very good pronunciation of all the hiragana and katakana symbols. They are color coated, and can with stand some water (Unfortunately I got first hand experience with this). It took me about a week to learn both of them and it took an additional week to learn how to write them. Plus, it beats making them yourself.

I am extremely happy with the cards. With these cards, I learnt all the hirigana and one day. And when I started learning the katakana, I surprisingly learnt all of them within an hour!!!! Well, the Kana, not the vocabulary! But still! One thing to add though: Since I am Chinese, it's easier for me to learn Japanese than other western learners. But I did come across other materials which (might be useful but) are boring. To round up: highly quality cards; highly recommended. P.S.: I am so happy with the cards that I purchased the complete set of Kanji cards afterwards. If one day I speak Japanese, it's White Rabbit Press.
