QUOTE(kaeovo @ Apr 5 2008, 12:44 AM) Why? There already are some great Mac-only Japanese Kanji Flashcard programs/gadgets, IIRC. I think it's about time Windows users got something equally good. Actually, you gave me the perfect argument for my opinion. Now I'm thinking the iTouch/iPhone would be a wonderful platform to develop for...and it also seems to mitigate a lot of our data security concerns. QUOTE(maxhodges @ May 22 2008, 04:54 PM) Now I'm thinking the iTouch/iPhone would be a wonderful platform to develop for...and it also seems to mitigate a lot of our data security concerns. Any iTouch developers in our community? Hi Max-san, My vote would be for a program embedded within WRP. I would need to sign into WRP as a normal member and then sign into the kanji program. I have no problem with a one time fee as a registered user. I like the module format. It could be split initially into five levels (in order: kana, 4,3,2, and then 1) so that a flat-out newbie can begin flashing with kana, develop competency and then move on to level 4, etc. An animated stroke order function would facilitate the person practicing the proper strokes order at home while reviewing and perhaps a sound file of some form by a native speaker for pronunciation. I also agree about seeing the kanji within a sentence or two to understand usage better. I would go a step further and create a sentence for each reading. I agree certain kanji would have several sentence examples, and others only one or two, but it will provide a deeper illustration in reading. For what it's worth, setting it up in house on your own server, you would be able to detect if someone was acting inappropriately regarding hack programs and the like. Perhaps one of the members who are IT savvy could speak to that aspect better. I have no experience in IT outside of being a standard user (MAC). The argument about whether to sell a product or go online is moot in my mind. If the person buys a product, they will be on the computer anyway to run the program. It is no different than to sign into WRP as a registered user and begin studying. Food for thought Kikentai |

Max, I really hope that iPhone is only ONE of the platforms you're thinking of developing Kanji Flashcard software for, because even though it looks great and is very popular, I wouldn't be willing to splash out for it just to be able to have your Kanji Flashcard Software... Also, validation process over the Internet is perfectly OK, but please don't require people to be constantly online when they want to use the software. If that's the case, it just cancels the whole point of having Flashcard Software on my laptop so that I can use it on the road... And wireless Internet is not available just anywhere... Hope you understand. I'm all for paying for software, but I don't like it when it imposes unnecessary conditions and restrictions. Installing core application on my laptop and then downloading additional modules from your server after validation is enough, I think.
Cheers! |

Hello again,
Are there any news on this front? It's been two years since we proposed our ideas, the third box of flash cards has been out for quite a while so maybe it's time to consider investing some time into this software thing? Sure, there may be a long list of projects on your "back burner", but we don't know any of them... Cheers. |

Both have full JLPT and Joyo kanji and more, as well as intelligent tracking or Leitner flashcard learning system. Japanese in particular, is an awesome app for iPhone or iTouch. |

OK, I presume you're talking about software exclusive to iPhone.
Not everybody has it (or plans to buy it) though... If WRP decides to develop ANOTHER iPhone application when there aren't that many for other platforms, I don't think that's the wisest idea.... |

Kaeovo, I can understand you wondering why you've not seen any developments on the app-front yet. It's something we'll be looking into in some detail in 2010. This year there's been a huge increase in the number of apps available in the Apple App store, and of course the opening of other App stores such as that for Android. If we do develop an app we want to make sure it's of the same high quality as our other products, and that it offers a lot more than our nearest competitiors. We appreciate your patience! |
