Read Real Japanese - Short Stories by Contemporary Writers (with CD)
Way more exciting and fun than textbooks, "Read Real Japanese" grants Japanese language students easy access to truly interesting Japanese stories by actual contemporary writers. It's very easy to use (it includes furigana for all new kanji, and a dictionary including every word used in the book), and serves a great learning tool -- and, more importantly, a great way to really enjoy the richness of Japanese.
It uses a split page format, with the original Japanese on the right (in its original form, reading up-down and right to left), with easy to understand comments and explanations on the left-side page. Editor Michael Emmerich is passionate about Japanese literature, and he painstakingly selected these stories from among dozens of his favorites, in addition to arranging them thoughtfully for the benefit of the student.
A CD recording of all the stories, narrated by the lovely-voiced Reiko Matsunaga, is included with the book. It is recommended that you first listen to the stories and try to make out as much as you can, and follow by reading them. If you toggle back and forth between listening and reading, you will improve your Japanese on various levels.
