"Read Real Japanese" is a series that gives Japanese students access to real Japanese writing. This volume contains essays by 8 of Japan's most innovative and interesting writers, including Haruki Murakami and many more. The topics addressed in these essays are far more engaging than anything you would find in a textbook, and the language is completely natural, which means that you can learn more about real Japanese than you would from simply reading a textbook.

It's very easy to use (it includes furigana for all new kanji, and a dictionary including almost every word used in the book), and serves a great learning tool -- and, more importantly, a great way to really enjoy the richness of Japanese.

It uses a split page format, with the original Japanese on the right (in its original form, reading up-down and right to left), with easy to understand comments and explanations on the left-side page.

A CD recording of all the stories is included with the book. It is recommended that you first listen to the stories and try to make out as much as you can, and follow by reading them. If you toggle back and forth between listening and reading, you will improve your Japanese on various levels.
