Casio XD-470N Electronic Dictionary

This low-cost Japanese-English dictionary includes a pen input method which allows searching for kanji by writing it directly on the screen. Unfortunately the included Japanese-English dictionary is extremely basic. The Canon Wordtank G55 includes many more entries and much higher quality defintions, with example sentences and phrases. Nonetheless, the Casio XD-470N provides a powerful supplemental tool, by allowing you to easy search for kanji without knowing the reading (yomi.)

Because of the quality of the definitions, we cannot recommend this model as a primary Japanese-English dictionary for Japanese language learners, however if you are often trying to lookup kanji characters for which you don't have the reading, this dictionary would make your work much faster and easier. Once you find the character using the XD-470N, you can then enter the yomi into a quality Japanese-English dictionary, like the G55.

Please note:
knowing Hiragana is prerequisite to use any of the electronic dictionaries we are selling. If you don't already know hiragana, please consider purchasing our set of "Kana Flashcards" along with this product. There are about 46 kana characters, so if you learn 5 or 10 per day, you can learn hiragana in about a week.

Keep in mind:
When you look up a word from English to Japanese, the results come back written in Japanese (kanji, hiragana and katakana). Using the jump function you can quickly find what you are looking for, but it may pose an initial challenge (especially to beginners.)
